“Why didn’t you tell me before, should have told me earlier.”
“Dude you are not helping, what do I do? If I get caught with this stuff do you know what’ll happen to me?”
“Thanks for involving me; should’ve thought about what my dad’ll do to me, he’ll burn me at stake and I don’t even want to think what my mom will do to me, after my mom is done with me, cops will be lucky to have anything that’s left of me. And I would be labeled as a druggie…” and so on he went. Hehe yeah I got some funny friends.
“Alright alright, I’ll think of something, you don’t have to get involved in this. Thanks anyway.”
“Ok now what we have to do is call the cops.”
“we??? Go home dude, you don’t have to get involved.”
“keep quiet Adam, cant you see I am on the phone.”
See!! They are funny.
“Put your phone down. Don’t call the cops. Didn’t you hear me? it is they who are doing this to me.”
I grabbed his phone and hung up.
“Damn it Adam, its only two crooked cops you are talking about. You’ve seen two many spy movies give me that phone!”
“Yes I know Jeff but they made me confess remember, they have a written confession stating that I was caught carrying drugs, and it has my signature.”
“In that case we need to contact some one we can trust.”
“Do you know anyone?”
A few minutes and viola!! there was this guy at my house who had the clear cut features of a cop, his shirt was tucked in, his hair was not longer than a few millimeters, beard and moustache shaved clean, his face was like carved out of stone, yup a pure bred police man if I ever saw one.
…..
Jeff: what do we do?
Cop: jeff you shouldn’t have gotten involved, (looking at me) you shouldn’t have told anyone. I am telling you this cause jeff is a close friend of mine. No one should know I was here understand!. This thing is bigger than you and I. a good thing you guys called me. Every cop in male’ has been instructed to apprehend and book you for possession of narcotics if you try to contact us, so by all means you must do what they asked of you.
Me: what?? You mean the whole police department conspired to do this to me?
Cop: Basically yes, and I myself don’t know what’s going on beyond that. But you should be alright if you get the job done.
Jeff: wow, this is like a spy movie.
Me: you seriously want me to believe that every cop in male’ is in on this? This task of placing one single packet of Brown Sugar or Heroin under the seat of some motor cycle? Isn’t this a little too small for …I don’t know… the freaking police department.
Cop: I’m sorry that’s all I know, I shouldn’t be here, I’m leaving. Jeff you must leave this to Adam.
Jeff: alright.
With that piece of crappy advice he left. Am I to believe this is doings of more than two corrupt officers? No. They’d choose some one with a criminal history for that sort of thing or maybe a genius at thieving, I am neither. I am pretty sure its just two corrupt cops. Well anyway it looks as though I have no choice.
Later that night me and Jeff went to that place as per Lieutenant Giyas’s instructions. Yes Jeff came with me, he’d never abandon me (at least I’d like to think so). Anyway here we were at one of those small streets without sidewalks near Olympus; it was around 3 am thankfully no one was around. We located the motor cycle parked with a bunch of other cycles. Jeff was like
“Cool man we could be spies”
“Come on Jeff this is serious.”
“Hey wait Adam, this is a political activists house.”. He said pointing to the house with big yellow flags fixed on its outer walls. The cycle was 4 or 5 cycles away from the houses front door.
“Adam do you think the government is trying to frame an opposition leader, or maybe get some dirt on them so they could manipulate them?”
“Hehe you maybe right or they maybe in league with the opposition and are dealing drugs, or maybe they are video taping us so they could get you, yeah you are the one they want. Whichever way, I don’t care Jeff and we do not know who this cycle belongs to. Lets just get this over with and leave Jeff.”
“Alright boss, lets do this and go.”
I was nervous, more afraid then nervous actually, I had the brown sugar or the heroin packet in my pocket, I had to do this. I asked Jeff to be the look out. He was standing on about 5 feet away from me looking both ways from time to time, I was trying to force the seat up to make an opening from the side, just enough to drop the packet inside. I’ve seen people do this effortlessly; people drop keys or whatever by lifting the middle section of the seat. But it was harder than it looked, beads of sweat had formed on my forehead, they were slowly sliding down along my forehead coupling together with other sweat beads and falling down onto my knees. I had an opening almost the size of the packet when Jeff said quietly “someone’s coming”.
I couldn’t see the street clearly as I was crouching in between two motorcycles.
“How close?”
“Veryy.”
I wasn’t going to waste all the effort I exerted into this opening, so I squeezed the packet in from the opening, I might have broken the packet but I didn’t care, I got it in. As I got up I caught a figure of a man coming towards us from the corner of my eyes, I heard his footsteps stop just for a moment when I got out, although he was about 7 or 6 feet away I was too scared to look directly. Immediately I started walking towards the direction he was walking, Jeff came along with me, Jeff said “lets run”, “No, we will walk.”, at the first intersection we turned right, “lets run now” said Jeff, “No man just keep walking”, I thought his footsteps will fade away but it was neither fading away nor was it getting louder. we quickened our pace a bit, the footsteps behind increased its tempo, we turned left at the next junction hoping he would go straight or turn right. But he did not, The man was following us…..

“Adam, its time”
“I cant talk right now.. I’m with Mary.”
“Listen to me carefully; meet lieutenant Giyas tonight at 9:30 sharp. He’ll be at Royal Garden waiting for you.”
“Tonight???? Wajeeh…”
Click… beep beep beep beep
Mary: who was that?
Me: I’m really sorry. I have something to do; that was Lieutenant Wajeeh. Waiter!!! Bill please.
Mary: Lieutenant Wajeeh???? What does he want? Didn’t they let you go?
Me: It’s nothing, don’t worry, just some formalities I have to go through before they can close the case.
Mary: Is there something you are not telling me? And they filed a case for that lame fight?
Me: Not at all Mary…, and for your information it was a brutal fight, that whatsisname Sam guy would think twice before picking on me now..
Mary: Yeah right hehe... no lies ok
Me: You know I wouldn’t lie to you.
It kills me to lie to her, but I had no choice it was either this or 3 years in the slammer or maybe 6. With our bill paid we left symphony, drove Mary to her house said good night and all to her and drove off to the rendezvous. There he was; Lieutenant Giyas; one of the bastards who interrogated me and got me into this mess. As I sat down and ordered a coffee Lieutenant Giyas, slowly pushed a big brown envelope that was lying on the table towards me,
“What is this?”
“You don’t need to know.”
“Alright what do I do with it?”
He took out a picture handed it to me,
“Place the envelopes contents under the seat of this motor cycle.”
“That’s all??? what if I get caught? And if I do this I’m home free?”
“If you get caught its all over, you’ll know what’ll happen to you once you see the contents.”
“And if I don’t?”
“You go back to your miserable little life, you have my word.”
“Alright, can I ask why?”
“Do you know who’s motor cycle this is?”
“I have no idea.”
“Good. Keep it that way.”
“One more thing; where do I find the motor cycle?”
“We’ll inform you tonight at 2 am, till then keep the envelope safe..”
And then he left some money on the table and left. I thought this was a fairly easy job.
A little bit later in my room I laid there on my bed waiting for lieutenant Giyas’s instructions. I wanted this to be over with. I almost went crazy inside the solitary confinement cell, 4 days in there is too much for anyone, it breaks a person psychologically, wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. In my opinion solitary confinement is still torture, psychological torture. I laid there for a while before I decided to open the envelope. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what was inside. Who’d have thought these bastards were dealing Brown Sugar or maybe heroin .
(i guess you know what happened from here but i'll tell you anyway in eight..)

“What did you do that for?”
Which he tried to reply with another clenched fist, this time I managed to dodge,
“Calm down dude, what is this about?”
That first punch did hurt like hell, I didn’t want another one to land on me, don’t think anyone would want one of those. Anyway I didn’t want to fight him because I don’t believe in violence plus he was pretty much bigger than me, my plan to get out of this was to talk my out, should be pretty easy, as I was sure I didn’t do anything to piss him off, believe me no one would want to piss this guy, he was huge plus I haven’t even seen him before last night. He probably wants his bike fixed, it’s the problem with big guys they talk with fists… yeesh.
“Hey hey we can talk this out, no need for any violence; I would have gladly paid for the damages to your bike if you had simply asked. Hell!! I am willing to pay even now, so please just stop..calm down ok”
He did not show any signs of calmness, he was trembling with anger (didn’t know this was possible before); boy this guy sure was angry, He said
“That’s right, you’ll pay. You’ll pay dearly brother.”
Brothers don’t PUUNNCH brother’s brother. Ok I did not say that, but I was thinking it pretty loud.
“What did I ever do to you?, if this is not about your bike what is this about?”
“Oh you don’t remember now do ya? Let me refresh your memory.”
He was coming at me with clenched fists, whatever it was I didn’t want to remember. I quickly turned to run away from this, but it turned out he was much quicker, he got a hold on my shirt from back, pulled me backwards to the ground, took a hold of me by my collar with his left hand and with his right BAM, THUD, THUD. I tried to throw punches of my own but I don’t think I landed a single one on him. By this time we had managed to gather an audience of our own.
He was shouting,
“REMEMBER NOW??? REMEMBER.”
Obviously my plan wasn’t working, I was praying for some one to stop this guy.
I don’t know how many punches I took when someone came though the crowd and took a hold of him.
Stranger: calm down, you are killing this kid?
Me thinking: “aah finally but dude I’m no kid”
Sam: This is the ###*^% that made out with my girl.
Me thinking: “what?????”
Stranger: isn’t this the guy we ran into last night?
Sam: This is the very same #$@# we were going to bash last night mode.
Me thinking: “whaat???? ”
Me: What are you talki…. BAM
This time it was this Mode guy, he kicked me and while I was on the ground too. I thought he came to stop Sam.
Mode: so you are the dumb #%%$ who made out with Sherin huh.
Me thinking: “Fuuu#$%k”
Sherin has sure got me into some trouble, wished I hadn’t met the @#$^@#$”
Me: I DID NOT…
Finally some cops arrived on the scene, didn’t say a word to us before they threw the three of us in to the police vehicle.
*******
Inside the vehicle:
Me: look Sam; first of all I didn’t know she had a boyfriend. Wouldn’t have err. umm.. if I had known you know. Anyway second she came onto me.
Sam: Shut the #%$^ up..
Mode: Do you want to die?
Cop: quiet back there…
Me a little quietly: no really hear me out.. (I told him how it happened) . You see I am not the one to be blamed for this; she is the one who betrayed you, your trust. I mean I didn’t even attempt to kiss her, and you and I both know you couldn’t have landed a kiss if the girl doesn’t let you, right. What did she tell you?
Mode: he’s right Sam, she even called this guy to warn him about us.
Sam: how do you know that she called?
Mode: I heard her on the phone.
Me: you see, she called I did not even answer, I was unconscious most of this morning. She must have warned some other guy.
Sam: you better not be lying
I gave my phone to Sam.
Me: Check my call history yourself.
A few minutes later after checking, turned to mode and said
“Are you sure you heard her warning about us?”
Mode while nodding: a hundred and ten percent.
Me: She must be cheating on you with some other guy.
Sam gave me back my phone, didn’t say a word to me but his eyes say that he’s convinced, well partly convinced.

At the police station we three were put into separate interrogation rooms. This was the first time I was in one of these rooms, totally different from the ones they have in movies. There was no two way mirrors, it had a window with a view of the sea, it was actually on the second or the fourth floor; don’t remember quite well, this place was small, just enough space for a table and 3 chairs. One chair looked somewhat comfortable, this one was behind the table, and the other two very uncomfortable chairs were on the other side. I was sitting on one of those uncomfortable ones. I never knew those involved in fights were interrogated. I was there alone for some time that seemed like ages. All that time I was thinking about Mary, and was hoping she’ll not leave me.

“Good god!! What are you doing here? Better yet why out at this hour? Is everything all right?”
Her face showed expressions of sadness. Her eyes were watery, she was saying something; although, “what...” was all I heard her saying, then her words were drowned into a deafening silence. I was scared, couldn’t hear what she was saying, I noticed the sound of the rain or wind was not there either. Then suddenly I noticed the water that had accumulated in her eyes were sparkling, these sparkles were spreading from her eyes. In mere seconds they were everywhere. Where ever I looked they were there. The guy next to her; whom I didn’t recognize was coming towards me when darkness took over……
****
When I opened my eyes I saw my sister sitting beside the unfamiliar bed I was lying on reading something. I looked around, what I saw was injured people. I gathered I was admitted in a Hospital, by the looks probably IGM, an IV was being fed into me through my veins. The cuts on my feet had been dressed, probably stitched up.
“I’d like some water.” I said to my sis which gave her a startle,
“Ah! Finally awake. Are you alright? What happened? Mary was all tears. She called every one when you went unconscious on them last night.”
“Who are them?”
“I don’t know, Mary and some guy. So what happened? Were you mugged?”
“Accident. Some water please.”
I was going on about the accident when sis cut me off as she gave me some water,
“Were you cheating on Mary?”
“What!!! No. Why?”
“She was here; she left a couple of hours ago. She said you went to some girl’s house last night.”
“How did she know about that? Nothing happened; I just drove her home.”
Just a Kiss is nothing right, that was all that happened and it meant nothing really.
“Its none of my business but is that why your phone was switched off for more than 55 minutes when you were at Sherin’s place?”
“Look nothing happened, I didn’t switch my phone off, who told you that?”
“Mary of course. She was outside Sherins house the whole time. I believe you saw them when you left.”
“That was Mary?”
“Yes”
“Who was the guy she was with?”
“I don’t know, she mentioned his name once, yes Zufran, Don’t you know him?”
“I don’t. But, I am in deep trouble now aren’t I? She called me when I was there. I didn’t want to lie, and I knew if told her I was at Sherins place she wouldn’t understand, Mary knows we used to date. So I thought I’d come home and call her, that way I could say I was at home. It wouldn’t be a lie.”
“Sounds like you got a lot of explaining to do. Oh and by the way Sherin has called you a bunch of times.”
“How did she get my number? This looks bad doesn’t it? Did you answer her? Does Mary know?”
Sis was right; there were several calls by Sherin, from what sis said Mary didn’t know that Sherin called. That was a good thing I could recover from all this yet, I swore at that time to never give strange girls rides in the rain or never to get associated with any girl except for Mary and deleted Sherins number from my phone. I was discharged as soon as the IV was empty. Doctor said I had no major injuries I just passed out from a little loss of blood and that I should be fine now. I called Mary several times, she did not answer. She would be sleeping at the time; I decided to call her later.
Later that afternoon she never answered or returned any of my calls. It was killing me that she did not. I didn’t know whether she was angry with me or she was still asleep. I was hoping she was still asleep. I decided to go to her place and check. Halfway to Mary’s place I was waved to a halt by a guy, looked familiar.
“Are you Adam? ”, he asked
‘Strange…’, I thought. I knew this guy, I couldn’t remember from where though.
“Yes this is he, who wants to know? And why?”
Just then I remembered this was the guy driving the red bike last night, Sam.
His reply was with a clenched fist on my face. THUD.
(sigh.. six is next ...)
